The Theosophical Society encourages all its members to find their
own path to living an altruistic and active life.  Its members tend
to be actively concerned about the welfare of the planet and of
humanity in particular.  However, the Society does not align itself
with any other organization.  To do so would jeopardize its very
existence in some countries.  Recognizing the value of Theosophists
working together for the common good, Annie Besant, second
International President of the Society, established the Theosophical
Order of Service in the early 1900s.  The TOS is independent from
the T.S. and can therefore actively involve itself in a variety of
